About Maui

Maui Sunset

To fully appreciate the Maui experience, indeed, the Hawaii experience, you have to buy into what sounds like a Madison Avenue marketing tool: The Spirit of Aloha. While this kind of tourist pap generally can be rejected out of hand, the Aloha Spirit is a real, genuine, bona fide phenomenon that must be felt to be believed.

Hawaiians are just plain friendlier, more hospitable and more interested in your island experience than most hosts. A few hours on Maui soil and you’ll be lapping up the concept and feeling a little friendlier yourself.

Then there’s the island. It’s perfect. You can escape to a beach that can only be reached by scaling a steep cliff, or you can hang at a dockside bar with a mai tai in hand. The closest thing to litter you’ll find in this idyllic Polynesian paradise are fallen orchids in the streets.

The island's relatively small size means most day trips are easy to handle even for families with small children. It is not unusual for a family to visit the 10,000-foot-high summit of Haleakala and snorkel in Maui's calm blue waters on the same day.

On the other end of the scale, Lahaina, once a whaling village, is now Maui’s see-and-be-seen party haven. And, of course, Maui is a golfer's paradise, so don’t forget your clubs.

Know what you want from Maui and you’ll find it. Or open your heart to Aloha and go where the trade winds blow.
